Rack and pinion assemblies, ram assist kits and steering components for the 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999 and 2000-2004 Tacoma — 2WD, 4WD and Pre-Runner, in OEM and new aftermarket. Seven racks fit this generation and they are not interchangeable: they differ by drivetrain and by year split, and a Pre-Runner takes the 4WD rack.

There Are Seven Racks on This Page, and They Are Not Interchangeable
This is the thing worth getting right before you spend anything. The racks differ by drivetrain and by year split, and the prices differ accordingly. Two filters narrow it fast:
2WD, 4WD or Pre-Runner? A Pre-Runner uses the 4WD-style front end even though it is two-wheel drive, so it takes the 4WD rack, not the 2WD one.
Before or after 2001? Several racks are listed 1995-2000 or 2001-2004 rather than across the whole generation.
Check the fitment section on each listing against your truck. If two look identical by name, they are not — the difference is in the fitment.
Where to Go From Here
Stock replacement — the largest section. Racks, tie rods and steering components for a truck staying standard.
Ram assist — hydraulic assist for 35"-and-up tyres, where the factory rack alone runs out of muscle.
Odds and ends — fittings, lines, reservoirs and brackets.
Two of these look like the same part from the name alone and are not: the 2WD and the 4WD / Pre-Runner racks are different assemblies, and the OEM listing is the genuine Toyota part rather than an aftermarket equivalent.
When a Rack Is Not Enough — Ram Assist
Once you are on 35s and heavier, the factory rack can steer the truck but it has to fight for it, and that shows up as slow response and worn components. The Rock Assault Power Steering Kit for the 1995-2004 Tacoma adds hydraulic assist so the ram does the work the rack was not built for. This is the upgrade people mean when they search for a 1st gen Tacoma steering rack upgrade and really want more authority, not just a new rack.
Tell Us the Truck
Year, 2WD or 4WD or Pre-Runner, and tyre size — that is all we need to confirm the right rack before you order. The rest of the truck is in the 1995-2004 Tacoma catalogue.
