Carbureted or Fuel Injected? Answer That First

Nearly every kit on this page is listed as one or the other, and it is the fastest way to halve the list:

  • 22R — carbureted. Kits for these are listed "carbureted only".
  • 22RE — fuel injected. Kits for these are listed as 22RE or EFI.

If you are not certain which you have, open the hood: a carburetor sits on top of the intake manifold with a round air cleaner over it. Fuel injection has a throttle body and an injector per cylinder.

Three Levels, and They Cost Very Different Money

The kits sort into three tiers. Work out which tier you are in before you compare prices, because comparing across tiers is what makes people feel misled.

  1. Bolt-on package — breathing and exhaust, engine stays together.
  2. Top end kit — cylinder head, camshaft, carburetion or induction and header, as one matched set.
  3. Short block or stroker — the bottom end comes apart. This is an engine build.

Level 1 — The Bolt-On Package

The EFI Power Package for the 1989-1995 22RE is listed to exactly this truck and this engine. It targets the complaint most owners actually have — a fuel-injected Toyota that will not hold speed up a grade in 4th, 5th or overdrive without downshifting — by improving volumetric efficiency across the rev range rather than only at the top. Nothing in the engine comes apart.

Level 2 — Top End Kits

These are where the real power is on a 2.4L four, because as our own description puts it the top end is carburetion, cylinder head and exhaust header. Each kit ships with a completely assembled cylinder head with a matching camshaft, plus matched induction and header. Both are listed 1985-1995, which covers this truck:

The Street version of the top end kit is listed at approximately 30-40 horsepower; the Pro kits sit above it.

Level 3 — Short Blocks and Strokers

These are built to order rather than pulled off a shelf, so talk to us about lead time before you plan the truck being off the road.

Smaller Steps

Not everything here is a four-figure commitment — the Weber 38 carburetor packages are on this page too, and they are a common first move on a carbureted 22R.

Tell us the year, whether it is 22R or 22RE, what the truck is used for and where you want to end up, and we will tell you which tier is the honest answer — sometimes it is the cheapest one. The rest of the truck is in the 1989-1995 Toyota Pickup catalogue.
