Mechanical or Electric? That Is the Whole Decision

  • Mechanical — bolts to the cylinder head and is driven off the camshaft by an eccentric. No wiring, no relay, nothing to switch on. This is how the truck left the factory and it is the right answer for a stock or near-stock carbureted 22R.
  • Electric — mounts near the tank, needs 12 volts, a ground and sensible fusing. The route when you are running a Holley or dual carburetors, or when the engine wants more volume than a cam-driven pump will give.

Pressure Is Not Optional Here

A carburetor wants low pressure. Too much and it pushes past the needle and seat and floods. The electric pumps on this page are listed at 3-5 psi and 7 psi max for exactly that reason, and those are not interchangeable choices — match the pump to the carburetor, not to the biggest number.

Do Not Forget the Small Parts

A mechanical pump replacement is a pump, a gasket, usually a spacer, and sometimes an eccentric. The pump on its own is not a complete job, and the cheap parts are the ones that leave a truck on the driveway.

Mechanical

The Delphi Mechanical Fuel Pump for the 22R is a direct replacement that bolts to the cylinder head, and it is listed 1980-1995, carbureted only — which covers every year of this truck. If you do not have the correct pressure or volume you can starve the engine, and a starved 22R is an expensive 22R, so a worn pump is not something to run on.

Two parts go with it:

  • Mechanical fuel pump spacer — listed 1981-1995, carbureted only. If your engine already runs a mechanical pump the spacer is probably already fitted; check between the pump and the head before ordering a second one.
  • Mechanical fuel pump gasket — a few dollars, and the difference between a dry install and doing it twice.

Eccentrics

The eccentric is what the camshaft uses to work the mechanical pump, and it wears. Both versions are listed for the 20R and 22R: the standard eccentric and the modified eccentric. If a new mechanical pump still will not deliver, this is the part to look at next.

Electric

  • Carbureted electric fuel pump, 3-5 psi — for street performance and off-road use, single or dual carburetors. Mount it close to the tank, and run a fuse and relay: it draws about 6 amps at wide-open throttle. If you are converting a factory EFI engine to carburetion, remove the EFI pump from the tank rather than leaving it in the circuit.
  • Pro Fuel Pump, 7 psi — high volume at low pressure, intended for high-performance street or race use and well suited to Holley carburetors. 97 gph, draws only 2 amps, 7 psi maximum with an externally accessible pressure relief valve, 3/8" NPT inlet and outlet, and it ships with a mounting bracket.

Tell Us What the Truck Has

Give us the year, the carburetor you are running and whether the engine was ever fuel injected, and we will confirm the pump, the pressure and the small parts in one go. Get in touch through our contact page. The rest of the fuel system is in carbureted fuel and air, and the whole truck is in the 1984-1988 Toyota Pickup catalogue.
