1984-1985 and 1986-1989 Are Different Trucks Up Front

This is the most important thing on the page, and it is why a part that fits another 4Runner may not fit yours.

  • 1984 and 1985 — leaf-sprung front axle. Our front leaf spring sets are listed for these two years only, at stock height and lifted.
  • 1986 through 1989 — independent front suspension on torsion bars. No front leaf springs apply. Front ride height comes from the torsion bars, and the wear items are ball joints.

The rear is leaf-sprung across all six years, so the rear spring sets are listed 1984-1989 and the split does not apply back there.

Where to Go From Here

  • Lift kits — the biggest section. Rear leaf sets 2" to 4" for all years, front leaf sets for 1984-1985, and long travel.
  • Stock height — replacement springs, shocks and torsion bars for a truck staying at factory height.
  • Brackets and hardware — U-bolt flip kits, bump stops, limit straps and track bar mounts. A short list on this generation.
  • Lowering — one item, and it is torsion bars. Almost nobody lowers these.

Stock-Height Springs

The 1986-1989 Front End

No springs to buy up front, so this is what there is: Sway-A-Way performance torsion bars, Old Man Emu heavy-duty bars if the nose sags, and OE upper ball joints.

Shocks

OME front shocks, and the Pro Comp PRO-X rear shock for 0-1" of lift if the truck is close to stock.

Tell us the year and we will tell you which front end you have before you order anything. The rest of the 1st gen 4Runner catalogue is one level up.
